I. Definition and Function of a Leveling Machine

A leveling machine (also known as a sheet leveling machine) is a type of industrial equipment used to eliminate defects such as surface irregularities, warping, and waviness in metal sheets, strips, or coils. By applying pressure to the material through mechanical or hydraulic means, the material gradually regains its flatness through multiple bending cycles. These machines are widely used in metal processing, automotive manufacturing, shipbuilding, and home appliance production.

II. Working Principle

The core principle of a leveling machine involves the staggered arrangement of multiple rollers, causing the sheet metal to repeatedly undergo alternating tensile and compressive stresses as it passes through the rollers. This gradually eliminates internal residual stresses, ultimately achieving a flat surface. Key parameters include:

Number of rolls: Typically 7–23 rolls; the greater the number of rolls, the higher the leveling precision (suitable for thin sheets).

Roll diameter and spacing: Determine the range of material thicknesses that can be processed.

Leveling speed: Affects production efficiency; CNC models can reach 15 meters per minute and are customizable.

III. Main Types and Features

Hand-Crank Leveling Machine

Roller pressure is adjusted via mechanical transmission. It features a simple structure and low cost, making it suitable for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Disadvantages: Lower precision and limited adjustment flexibility.

Hydraulic Leveling Machine

Pressure is controlled by a hydraulic system, providing uniform force output. It is suitable for high-strength thick plates (such as 10–50 mm steel plates).

Typical Applications: Shipbuilding steel plates, structural components for construction machinery.

CNC Leveling Machines

Integrated with a PLC control system, these machines allow for preset parameters and automatic adjustment of roller clearance and pressure.

Advantages: High precision (flatness error ≤ 0.1 mm/m); suitable for high-value-added products (e.g., precision electronic component housings).

IV. Key Application Areas

Industry

Typical Materials

Accuracy Requirements

Automotive Manufacturing

Body steel sheets, aluminum alloy sheets

±0.2mm/m

Aerospace

Titanium alloy sheets, high-strength aluminum sheets

±0.05mm/m

Home Appliances

Stainless steel panels, galvanized steel sheets

±0.3mm/m

New Energy

Steel for photovoltaic mounting brackets, sheet metal for battery casings

±0.15mm/m

V. Considerations for Model Selection

Material Properties

Thickness Range: 0.3–50 mm (range varies significantly by machine model)

Material Strength: For high-strength steel, select a hydraulic model to prevent roller deformation.

Machining Precision Requirements

Standard structural steel: Select a 7–9-roller mechanical model.

Precision stamped parts: Require CNC models with 17 or more rollers.

Production Efficiency Matching

Continuous production lines: It is recommended to configure automatic loading/unloading devices to reduce downtime.

Additional Features

Deburring device: Allows simultaneous edge processing for precision-machined parts.

In-line inspection system: Monitors flatness in real time to reduce scrap rates.

VI. Key Maintenance and Care Points

Routine Maintenance

Check the lubrication system every 8 hours to ensure the roller shaft bearings are adequately lubricated.

Remove metal debris from the roller surfaces to prevent scratching subsequent sheets.

Periodic Inspection

Check the stability of the hydraulic system pressure monthly and replace the filter elements.

Calibrate the parallelism of the rollers every six months; adjust if the error exceeds 0.05 mm.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Sheet misalignment: Check whether the guide mechanism is misaligned and verify the levelness of the rollers.

Surface indentations: Inspect the roller surfaces for damage or embedded foreign objects.
