When a leveling machine is used on its own, pre-cut sheets are typically fed into it one by one for leveling. However, in many continuous production settings, sheet metal is supplied in the form of steel coils, which must first be uncoiled and leveled before proceeding to subsequent processing steps. This is why decoiler-leveling lines exist—they integrate the three processes of decoiling, leveling, and feeding into a single continuous automated production line, significantly reducing manual intervention and intermediate handling time.

This article outlines the composition and structure of decoiler-leveling lines, the functions of each module, and the specific challenges that leveling machines must address within this system.

Basic Components of an Uncoiling and Leveling Line

A standard uncoiling and leveling line typically consists of the following main modules, which work in sequence from coil loading to sheet output:

Uncoiler

The uncoiler is responsible for clamping the steel coil and controlling the uncoiling speed. The steel coil is mounted on the uncoiler’s expandable shaft, which is driven by a motor to rotate and feed the coil at a controlled speed. Uncoilers are typically equipped with pressure arms to prevent the steel coil from unraveling or flipping during the uncoiling process.

The load capacity of the uncoiler determines the maximum weight of steel coils it can handle. Common specifications range from 500 kg to 30 metric tons, with corresponding ranges for the coil’s inner and outer diameters. Heavy-duty production lines are often equipped with hydraulic expandable shafts to facilitate quick loading and unloading during coil changes.

Straightener/Leveler

After a steel coil is uncoiled, the sheet exhibits significant curling deformation. This curvature must be eliminated using a straightener to restore the sheet to a nearly flat state. This step is the core process of the entire production line, and the performance of the straightener directly determines the flatness of the final sheet.

On an uncoiling and leveling line, the straightener typically operates in continuous-feed mode, with the sheet continuously passing through the roller train at a preset speed, unlike single-machine leveling, which feeds sheets one at a time. This places higher demands on the straightener’s ability to match speeds and its reliability for long-term, stable operation.

Feeder

The feeder is located downstream of the leveling machine and is responsible for precisely feeding the leveled sheet metal into downstream equipment (such as punch presses, laser cutters, etc.). Feeders typically use clamping rollers or pneumatic clamping mechanisms, with stepper or servo motors controlling the feed step and speed for each cycle to ensure feeding accuracy.

Some production lines also incorporate straightening rollers or guiding devices after the feeder to further ensure the sheet’s flatness and positional accuracy.

Loop Buffer

The speeds of the uncoiler, leveling machine, and feeder modules are often not perfectly synchronized—the uncoiler typically unwinds at a lower, constant speed, while the feeder operates in an intermittent, step-by-step motion (advancing one step per punch cycle). To accommodate this speed difference, a buffer zone (Loop) is set up in the middle of the production line, allowing the sheet metal to form a naturally sagging loop in this area, which serves to buffer speed variations and relieve tension.

The size of the buffer zone is monitored by sensors; when the loop is too small (insufficient buffer), the production line will slow down or pause the uncoiling process; when the loop is too large, it will accelerate the take-up.
